2004 World Under 17 Hockey Challenge During Christmas Holidays in St. John's Newfoundland
  

Some of the members of the Team Ontario entry in the 2004 World Under 17 Hockey Challenge were on hand for the press conference to announce the roster. The Ontario team, made up of players born  in 1987, features nineteen (19) players from the Ontario Hockey League; one (1) from Provincial Junior A;  one (1) from the Western Junior B; and one (1) from the Central Junior A Hockey League. “We feel the team is very strong on the backend and features good depth and team speed up front which should benefit us in a short tournament format," stated the teams Director of Operations Alan Millar who selected the team in conjunction with the coaching staff of Head Coach Bob Jones and Assistant Coaches Peter Sidorkiewicz, Jason Nobili and Jason Brooks.

The team will depart for St. John's, Newfoundland on December 26 where they will play in the World Hockey Challenge beginning December 28 thru January 4. The tournament features ten (10) teams in two five (5) team conferences playing a round robin format followed by a play-off crossover based on conference seedings after the round robin. 

Team Ontario will play in a conference with Russia, Finland, Team West and Team Pacific.  The other conference will include teams from the United States, Team Quebec, Team Atlantic, Slovakia and Germany.

The Referee-in-Chief for this event is Vernon Doyle (PEIHA), supervisors Jim Hare and Don Kelly of HNL will join Hockey Canada Referee-in-Chief Maurice Roy and NHL Technical Director of Officiating David Baker at the event.

In Order To Select the Officials Working the Under-17 World Challenge, The Hockey Canada Officiating Program launched a Program of Excellence this season in a partnership with the CHL and NHL. 
Three Regional Camps were held for 45 officials nominated by their Branch in October and November. The three camps seen on ice skating sessions led by Dave Smith of the NHL Officiating Department, guest speakers Andy Van Hellemond and Dave Baker of the National Hockey League along with CHL Officiating representatives and Branch Referee-in-Chief’s.

Following the weekend camps, supervisions were performed during games assignments to assist in the selection of the 17 officials who will represent the Officiating Program in St. John’s, Newfoundland this December 28th-January 5th. The officials not chosen to attend the Under 17 will continue to be mentored throughout the season and be eligible to be selected for the 2005 Under 17 in Lethbridge, Alberta.
